Two Tips for People Who’ll Be Using Drive-Up Self-Storage Units for the First Time

Here are two tips for people who'll be using drive-up self-storage units for the first time.

They should position the back of their vehicle as close as possible to the door of their unit

Most people transport items to and from their units in either the boot of their car or in the rear storage space in their van or Ute. With this in mind, those who are about to drop off their first collection of items at their drive-up storage unit should position the back of their vehicle as close as possible to their unit's door. Making sure that there is almost no gap between the section of the vehicle where the items are located and the entrance to the unit will mean the person dropping off their items will only need to carry their heavier items for a few seconds before placing them in the unit. This, in turn, will make the drop-off of their objects quicker and make it far less likely that they'll hurt their back as a result of carrying a big, heavy item for too long.

Additionally, if a person's items are positioned in the area of their vehicle that's directly beside the opening to their unit, they won't have to, for example, push a big piece of furniture or a very large box across the ground outside their unit to get it inside, but can simply slide it directly from the back of their vehicle onto the floor of the unit. This could be useful on rainy days, as they won't need to worry about having to slide items over the muddy, wet ground before they could get them inside their unit.

They should be considerate of other users of the drive-up storage facility during their visits

It's important for those who have decided to use drive-up self-storage facilities to be considerate of others during their visits. Whilst this is something that even those who rent standard units need to do, it's particularly vital when people are using drive-up storage units as, when there are bulky vehicles being parked outside the units, there is more chance of someone getting in someone else's way.

As such, people who've rented these units should try to park their vehicle in such a way that it's directly in line with their unit and is not, for example, parked at an angle that partially blocks the entrance to one of the adjacent units. If they have to do the latter, due to, for example, their vehicle being extremely large, they should try to drop off their items quickly and move their vehicle out of the way, and then return to their unit on foot to organise the objects that they left inside it. Additionally, those who use these facilities should switch off their engines as soon as they're parked in a suitable position outside their unit; this will ensure that the fumes from their vehicle's exhaust don't get into the open doors of nearby units.

Storing my household

Last year I was offered a really awesome 12-month work secondment in New York, but of course I couldn't take all of my stuff over there as I have a 4 bedroom house here and I sure wasn't able to afford that in New York! I had to go through the process of packing everything up so that I was able to rent a furnished place over there then come back to all of my belongings. This blog is all about how to be an efficient packer and how to store your items properly if you are heading away for a period of time.
