Two Tips for Stowing Supplies for a Surprise Birthday Party in a Self-Storage Facility

Posted on: 26 October 2020

If you're planning a surprise party for someone you live with, then you may need to hide the party supplies for their celebrations at a self-storage facility so they don't spot them and realise what you have planned. If you do this, you should follow this advice.

1. Make sure you check that all of your party supplies are allowed in the facility

Before moving your supplies into a self-storage unit, you should provide them with a list of the party supplies and ask them if everything on this list is allowed on their premises. For example, some self-storage companies may not permit party sparklers, birthday candles or alcohol to be stored in their units since these items can cause fires if they are kept near any ignition sources.

Understand the rules so you don't unintentionally break the self-storage company's rules. Furthermore, it will mean that after you've already stowed the party supplies in the unit, you won't have to remove some of the items and find somewhere else to put them. It will also mean you won't pay for a unit that is much larger than you actually require. For example, if the storage facility does not allow alcohol in its units and you decide to stow your 10 cases of wine at a friend's house instead, you'll be able to book a smaller and cheaper unit.

2. Choose a self-storage facility that's as close to to your home as possible

The self-storage facility you use should ideally be no more than a quick drive away from wherever you're having the party. If the person for whom you're having the party lives with you, then you may only have a few short hours to get the house ready for their surprise party whilst they're at work, or while they're being deliberately kept out of the house by a helpful friend.

If you have to drive a long distance to reach the facility where you've put the party supplies, this travelling will use up some of this precious prep time and you might not get the balloons, streamers or the cocktail bar set up in time for their arrival. If when they walk in the door, they're greeted by the sight of a half-finished party area, they may not be quite as delightfully surprised as you wanted them to be.

Storing my household

Last year I was offered a really awesome 12-month work secondment in New York, but of course I couldn't take all of my stuff over there as I have a 4 bedroom house here and I sure wasn't able to afford that in New York! I had to go through the process of packing everything up so that I was able to rent a furnished place over there then come back to all of my belongings. This blog is all about how to be an efficient packer and how to store your items properly if you are heading away for a period of time.
